[Decorative beadwork chest piece] [realia]. 1909.

Necklace made by Percy Grainger during his 1909 Australian Tour and later in England. Patterned beadwork collar and tassels: white, red, blue, black and yellow beads. Refer to Percy Grainger's collection of and interest in Ethnographic material. Original label by Percy Grainger reads: "Bead Necklace made by Percy Grainger in Australia (and London?) along S. African lines. Took about (?160?) days to make? Was gift to beloved mother, worked at in trains in Australia, having it hung on strings. Man passing in another train said 'look, there's a bloody spider in there'. All after Christchurch Museum, 1909."
