W. B. Young was born in Yorkshire and studied for his M.A. at Cambridge. He arrived in Australia in 1885 and gained prominence in Melbourne as a painter and poster designer. From 1929 to 1934 Young wrote for the Melbourne Herald as its art critic. He was also a writer and poet of some note, and his published works include Goya's Proverbs and The Children's Bread. Stonehaven was born in 1874. In 1896 he joined the Diplomatic Service. From 1910 to 1922 he held the seat of Rugby in the House of Commons and the seat of Ayr Burghs from 1922 to 1925. He was Minister of Transport and Commissioner of Works from 1923 to 1924. Stonehaven was Governor-General of Australia from 1925 to 1931.
