Diary and miscellanea [manuscript]. 1852-1882.

Diary, 1852-1854, written on his way to and in the colony of Victoria. Contains an account of Haynes' voyage from London to Melbourne, 3 June-27 Sept. 1852, on the ship "Kent"; drafts of letters to his father and others, June 1852-June 1855; a register of letters sent; and notes from a bible class. Inserted between endpaper and flyleaf is the photograph of an unidentified man, a mourning card for John Toon of Kew, Victoria, who died 13 December 1882, and an obituary notice for John Toon.

Thomas Haynes emigrated to Australia in 1852, and was employed as a grocer's assistant in Melbourne until 1859, when he took up farming. From 1863 until 1871 he held various offices, including those of Secretary, Surveyor and Engineer, in the Shire of Wyndham, later Werribee. From 1871 until 1872 he was Secretary, Treaurer and Engineer of the Shire of Alberton, and in 1872 he became Borough Surveyor and Engineer of Collingwood. From the description of Papers. 1852-1883.
