Manning Simons was born in Charleston in 1846. After attending the College of Charleston and serving as a courier in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he attended the Medical College of the State of South Carolina. He graduated in 1869, and stayed in Charleston to practice gynecology. William Cyril O'Driscoll was born in Charleston in 1881. He attended the South Carolina Military Academy (which became the Citadel in 1910), and graduated from the Medical College of the State of South Carolina in 1905.
