Simons, Manning, 1846-1911

Manning Simons was born in Charleston in 1846. After attending the College of Charleston and serving as a courier in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he attended the Medical College of the State of South Carolina. He graduated in 1869, and stayed in Charleston to practice gynecology. Dr. Simons was a professor of anatomy, gynecology, and obstetrics at the Medical College of the State of South Carolina and helped organize the St. Francis Training School for Nurses. Dr. Simons was active in many organizations, and served as president of the South Carolina Medical Association, the Medical Society of South Carolina, and the Southern Surgical and Gynecological Association. Other organizations that Dr. Simons provided his services to include the South Carolina Committee on State Medicine and Public Hygiene, the Southern Railroad, and the Charleston Consolidated Railroad and Lighting Company. Dr. Simons died in 1911.
