Letters and documents, originals and copies, relating to affairs in northern Mexico, principally Sonora, with emphasis on mission administration, Indian questions, and political unrest. Several items relate especially to mission affairs, including letters from Fray Faustino González, president of the Pimería Alta missions, to officials at the presidio of Altar, 1824-1828, items 2, 6, 22, 25, 28, 30 and 40; letters of Father Miguel Montés, 1827, to the alcalde at Altar, items 31-35; conflict of the friars with temporal authorities, 1827-1828, items 29, 39, and 41; letters of Fray Juan Vaño, 1827, concerning complaints against the alcalde of Altar, items 11 and 18; inventories of mission property at Tumacácori and San Ignacio Caburi, 1829-1841, items 46 and 65. As to material relating especially to the Indians, there are letters from the Pima Chieftain, Captain Enrique Tejeda, 1826, items 20 and 26; others concerning Indian threats in Sonora, from officials in Altar, Caborca, Horcasitas, Santa Cruz, Cieneguilla, and Arispe, 1824-1835, items 1, 13-14, 21, 24, 27, 36, 38, 54-55, 57-58, 62, 64, and 67. Administrative questions are reflected in letters of Mariano de Urrea, 1824, concerning settlement of a dispute between Sonora and New Vizcaya, items 3-5; letters from Governor José María Gaxiola of Sonora, 1821, regarding establishment of a mail route from Altar to the Californias, and the arrest of some American intruders, items 42-44; rebellion aimed at removing Gaxiola as governor in favor of Francisco Iriarte, 1829, items 47 and 50-53; a tariff schedule of 1827 drawn up by Pedro de la Serna, at Cieneguilla, Sonora, items 37 and 59; miscellaneous items relating to the policies of government in the administration of affairs in norther Mexico, especially Sonora, 1825-1844, e.g., maintenance of public order, frontier defense, and local administrative problems, items 9, 10, 12, 15, 17, 49, 56, 60-61, 63, 66, and 68. Other documents concern military matters primarily, with a report of Governor Simón Eli̋ex González and other papers, 1824-1826, regarding various garrisons, Apache threats, and lands, items 7, 16 and 19; report of a victory won by Captain Ramón Mier, and an exhortation by José Figueroa to maintain order, 1826-1829, item 23 and 48; and miscellaneous military affairs, 1824-1828, items 8 and 45.
