Letters and documents, originals and copies, relating to affairs in northern Mexico toward the close of the colonial period and during the early years of independence, with emphasis upon frontier defense, the Iturbide Empire, mission administration, and mining. The material may be divided into several classifications, namely, items relating to the Marquisúes de Rubi and frontier defense, 1768-1772, item 1; work to be done by Simón Elías González in his report on military posts and frontier defense from Sonora to New Mexico, ca. 1814, items 42-44; papers concerning Ignacio Pérez's overdue debt for cattle bought for the armed forces from a number of missions, correspondence with their priests, and Pérez's relations with the local authorities in the politico-military turmoil in the 1823, notably Echávarri's Plan de Casa Mata and his correspondence with Colonel Alberto Máynez and the Chihuahua Town Council, items 49, 56-58, 60-62, 71-75, 77, 82-83, 92-109. Iturbide's rise to power in 1823, items 69, 70, 81; letters and proclamations of Governor Ignacio de Bustamante of Sonora, 1821, relating to convocation of a national constituent congress, items 65-68; letters of Pedro María de Allande concerning the Plan de Casa Mata, 1823, items 90 and 91; letters and proclamations of Gaspar de Ochoa, 1823, dealing with the Plan de Casa Mata, items 80, 85, 86, and 89; letters of Colonel Antonio Cordero, 1821-1823, regarding an order against judicial extortion of property from the natives, and his own refusal to resume official duties on the grounds of illness, items 59 and 87; a miscellany of papers on military and political affairs, ca. 1791-1823, items 5, 10, 46, 48, 64, and 84. The collection contains also papers relating to diocesan or ecclesiastical matters, particularly in Durango, 1777-1794, items 2, 3, 6-8, and 13; papers of or about Fray Faustino González and problems among the Indians on the Sonora frontier, 1821-1833, items 14-16, 20, 23-24, 30-32, and 34; circulars and letters of José Tomás de Zuza relative to mining, items 17-18, 20-22, and 25-28; a miscellany on the mines of the Cieneguilla area, 1800-1831, items 19, 29, 37, 40, and 50; material relating to wills and inheritances, 1762-1818, in Sonora and Sinaloa, items 12, 33 and 41; on the distribution of lands, 1807-1817, items 4, 9, 11, 36, 38-39, and 47.
