John E. Huerta, raised in Los Angeles, California, earned his bachelor's degree from the California State University, Los Angeles, in 1965 and his law degree at Boalt Hall. After studying and teaching in Lima, Peru, he joined California Rural Legal Assistance, and from 1973 to 1977 was a member of the law faculty at the University of California, Davis.
