John E. Huerta, raised in Los Angeles, California, earned his bachelor's degree from the California State University, Los Angeles, in 1965 and his law degree at Boalt Hall. After studying and teaching in Lima, Peru, he joined California Rural Legal Assistance, and from 1973 to 1977 was a member of the law faculty at the University of California, Davis. In 1977 he was appointed deputy assistant U.S. Attorney General for Civil Rights in the administration of James E. Carter. From 1980 to 1985 Huerta was the Executive Director of the Southern California office of the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund. At the time of the interview he was a partner in the law firm of Gronemeier, Baker and Huerta in Pasadena, California.
