Americus Cartwright (1840-1873) was the son of Matthew Cartwright (1807-1870) and Amanda Holman Cartwright (1817-1894) and brother of Leonidas and Columbus of San Augustine, Texas. He attended Kentucky Military Institute in Franklin County (1853-1859). During the Civil War, he served as a Confederate soldier in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana with Col.
