Americus Cartwright (1840-1873) was the son of Matthew Cartwright (1807-1870) and Amanda Holman Cartwright (1817-1894) and brother of Leonidas and Columbus of San Augustine, Texas. He attended Kentucky Military Institute in Franklin County (1853-1859). During the Civil War, he served as a Confederate soldier in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana with Col. Elkanah Greer's Third Texas Cavalry regiment of Brigadier General Ben McCulloch's Army of the West and with Walter P. Lane's Third Texas Cavalry Regiment of James P. Major's cavalry division.
