The collection consists of 11 bound volumes and one folder of miscellaneous manuscripts removed from the volumes. There are 3 account books and 3 daybooks from Guthrie's practice in Ohio and Indiana, and the daybook of George Barkley of Monticello, Ind. Also included are 4 scrapbooks of clippings of popular serial fiction, poetry, and religious materials.

Dr. William Guthrie was born in Pennsylvania. He studied and practiced medicine in Ohio, and settled there in Rossville around 1850. In 1861 he moved to Idaville, White County, Ind.; in 1870 to Monticello, White County, Ind.; and in 1872 back to Idaville. Guthrie was one of the first residents of Idaville.
