ALS, 1850 May 1 : Washington, D.C. to Lt. E.C. Ord.

Sherman writes on his wedding day expressing regrets that Ord cannot attend. He comments on the hectic activity and advises Ord, "Should you ever design to follow my example try and entice your bride out of Washington, whose society is hypocritical and decidedly gossipy ... "He speaks of having to begin married life "With the old song of economy."

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance.
