"Rustic Love: A Dialogue in two acts" was written by Withington in 1814 for performance at the Yale Commencement. The play has hypocrisy as its theme and concerns a country family whose virtues are almost destroyed by a confidence man posing as a fashionable gentleman.

Leonard Withington (1789-1885) was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He was a graduate of Phillips Andover Academy and Yale University in 1814, and served as minister of the First Church in Newbury, Massachusetts, from 1816 until his retirement in 1858.
