Henry Morgan (1810-1887) and Edwin Barber Morgan (1806-1881) were born in Aurora, N.Y., the sons of Christopher (1777-1834) and Nancy Barber Morgan (1785-1864). Christopher Morgan was one of the earliest settlers of Western New York, became a successful owner and operator of a general store, and acquired one of the largest estates in New York. Oliver Ellsworth was born at Ellington, Connecticut. Around 1837, he moved to Bloomington, Illinois and learned blacksmithing from Lewis Bunn. He later became a partner in the business and remained so until his death. As a young man, he worked at Loriston R. Livingston Scale Manufactory on Front Street in Pittsburgh.
