Papers, 1723-1953 ; bulk (1723-1909).

Contains personal and business papers relating to the Manley family of Augusta Co., Va. and Marion Co., formerly Va. and now W. Va.; and miscellaneous business and legal papers not related to the Manleys that document the functioning of law and government in Franklin and Augusta Co., Va., with scattered references to other Va. counties and Marion Co. (Cont.) Approx. half of the Letters series consists of Manley family letters as well as correspondence with the Righter, Bigler, and McCalley families. Of particular interest in later documents is information concerning a C.W.A. self-sufficiency homestead project for Mineral Co., W. Va. miners. Letters not related to the Manleys include a revolutionary war note describing the hanging of Tories, and 10 letters to Hugh W. Sheffey, Augusta Co. representative to the Va. General Assembly. (Cont.) The bulk of the collection (ca. 200 items) is in the Business and legal series and is organized into accounts; court cases; deeds and indentures; tax papers; and miscellaneous folders, respectively. Many of the materials originated in Franklin Co., Va. and Marion Co. and are primarily concerned with land and debt issues and frontier justice. A few notable items include: summonses (with "Kept off by force of arms" notes); depositions by unwed mothers; land deeds, including two signed by Dinwiddie and Fairfax; a slave indenture; a 1723 will; marriage licenses; and contracts dealing with natural resources (coal rights, logging, and gas). (Cont.) The Civil War series includes possible spy notes; CSA deserter reports and a pardon for Peter B. Righter signed by Andrew Johnson. Information on the excavation of an Indian mound in Augusta Co., along with a list of Indian villages; typescript copies of Indian land deeds and a map of tribes are included in the Indian data series. Photos; various notes; and a pamphlet on "The naval career of Captain John Manley of Marblehead" are found in the Family memorabilia series. Notes on stagecoaching and various postcards are included in the Miscellaneous Valley history series.
