T.C. Steele and Mary Lakin Steele Papers, 1869-1966.

The collection consists of correspondence and typescript papers. Biographical materials include memorial tributes and letters concerning the disposal of Steele's paintings. His correspondence contains draft letters from Munich (1881-1885) to his sponsors in Indianapolis, and letters to and from his wife while Steele was away painting and during her stay in a sanitorium. The correspondence of Mary Lakin Steele includes letters home from Germany, Metamora and Brookville, Ind., describing her husband's work, and letters to her husband on a family trip to Kansas. Also included are lists of paintings executed and exhibited, transcripts of T.C. Steele's journal and notes, and papers delivered on Impressionism and the art of the American West. Correspondents include James Whitcomb Riley, Louisa Tarkington, and Hilton U. Brown. There are also photographs of Brown family members.

A native of Indiana, Steele was primarily known as a landscape artist with an interest in Impressionism and as a member of the Hoosier School of art. He married Mary E. Lakin in 1870 and moved to Indianapolis, working primarily as a portrait painter. From 1880 to 1885 he studied in Munich, and returned to Indianapolis with an interest in landscape painting.
