Military correspondence and papers concerning the Trans-Mississippi Dept., C.S.A., 1863, and the North Carolina Reserves, 1864-1865. Included are the papers of J.W. Hinsdale, written from Virginia while under the command of Holmes, his uncle; petitions from women asking for protection of lives and property; material on the battle of Helena, Ark, 1863; requests for reserves to be sent into active service and to be used in agricultural service; military telegrams to Holmes as the head of the North Carolina Reserves concerning troop movements and skirmishes; the effort to protect Plymouth, N.C.; the Confederate ram, Albemarle; Sherman's invasion of North Carolina; and the final days of the war. Correspondents include P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, Jefferson Davis, Wade Hampton, Bradley Tyler Johnson, Joseph E. Johnston and J.G. Martin. Also present are the letters of John Shepherd while traveling in Europe, 1867.

Theophilus Hunter Holmes was born November 13, 1804 to a prominent North Carolina family. In 1829 he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Prior to the Civil War, Holmes served in various campaigns against Native Americans and also saw action in the Mexican War, where he was brevetted for gallantry at the battle of Monterrey.
