Captain J. Shepherd was sent by the British Commander in Chief on the South American Station, Valparaiso, to make the annual tour of the Islands 'for the purpose of communicating with our Consuls, protecting our commerce, maintaining order amongst the Seamen of our Merchant Vessels and redressing the grievances of our British Subjects'. He visited Pitcairn Island, the Sandwich Islands and Tahiti.
