Shipmaster of Orleans, Mass., who developed and patented a special rigging for ships in 1857. He sailed with various cargoes to ports in the southern U.S., Cuba, Chile, San Francisco, Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, London, Liverpool, New York, Boston, etc. The papers include correspondence with, among others, shipowners Richard and Thomas M. Devens, W.H. Russell, Francis Windsor Fay, William A. Hyde, and Theodore and George B. Chase; with his wife Rebecca B. Linnell, his friend J. Martin Manterola, and other Linnell and Crosby family members. Also, bills, receipts, cargo lists, crew and passenger lists, and other shipping papers for the ships Elizabeth Bruce, Cabinet, Windsor, Stamboul, Huma, Norman, Buena Vista, Eagle Wing and Flying Mist. (Cont) Also, account book, 1839-62; a few papers of Heman F. Atwood concerning his share in the Great Skaget Cranberry Bog in Orleans; and papers concerning Linnell's rigging.
