The guide contains a foreword, table of contents with each alphabetized document's identifying number and date, and a subject index which refers to the document numbers. The one thousand seven hundred forty-two letters and documents span the period 1716 to 1840, but the great bulk pertains to the American Revolution and its leaders, e.g., correspondence of Samuel Adams (1722-1803), Robert Morris (1734-1806), Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834), George Washington (1732-1799), and Henry Knox (1750-1806). Some of the correspondence is dated after the Revolution. There are orderly books, wage receipts, letters written among the Committees of Correspondence, appointments of officers, correspondence of the provincial governments, morning reports, petitions, broadsides, and satirical verse. Earlier items include land deeds and receipts for slaves.
