Papers, 1796-1824; 1842.

This collection of papers reflects Scofield's participation in these several areas. They contain accounts, receipts, and letters relating to his mercantile activity; his commission as Captain in the Ohio Militia and numerous military orders, rosters, and receipts; several legal documents involve Scofield either as a judge in the Court of Common Pleas or as a purchaser and/or surveyor of Ohio lands. Scofield was also a commissioner of the Bank of Chillicothe. Several letters in the collection concern the bank's business. Also included are three miscellaneous papers generated from Ohio: an 1815 Lancaster, Ohio, lottery ticket; a list of 4th of July celebration toasts, and an 1842 receipt of a land purchase in Huron County, Ohio.

Elnathan Scofield (1773-1841), originally of Connecticut, removed to Lancaster, Ohio in 1802 as a surveyor. Throughout his life, Scofield had a variety of occupations, including running a dry goods store, County Surveyor and Justice of the Peace, terms in both branches of the Ohio legislature, postmaster of Lancaster, associate judge in the Court of Common Pleas of Fairfield County, and serving as Captain in the Ohio Militia.
