The collection contains Weiss' correspondence, 1839-1894. Several letters were addressed to his wife, Sarah Fiske Jennison Weiss ( - ), following his death. The majority of his correspondents were friends, colleagues, and notable publishers and literary figures. There are also letters written by his mother Mary Galloupe Weiss ( - ) while Weiss was a student in Germany. They include his descriptions of the sights in Europe, family matters, and local news in Worcester, especially news of the Unitarian society there. Letters from various friends, some of whom were studying in Paris, France, contain references to his life in Heidelberg, the sights of Paris, and the increasing popularity of abolitionism in America. There is also much information on Weiss' trials in Watertown and New Bedford, includng his resignations and the reactions of members of his congregations. The collection contains correspondence from William Dean Howells (1837-1920), Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), and John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), relative to Weiss' literary endeavors. There is also a scrapbook entitled "Soldier Songs and Poetry," which is a compilation of Weiss' poetry and various newsclippings of military songs concerning many historic American and European battles, especially those of Germany.
