This notebook, kept by Drowne at age twelve, contains poetry and sketches. The poetry, probably copied from other sources, deals primarily with the teaching of morals. The sketches, usually done in pen and ink, illustrate the poems, and are drawn in a naive style.

Solomon Drowne (1753-1834) was a surgeon from Providence, R.I. He was born in 1753, graduated from Rhode Island College (Brown University) in 1773, and received medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Dartmouth College. During the American Revolution, Drowne was a surgeon and following the war, 1784 to 1785, toured European hospitals and medical schools.
