Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette was born at Chavaniac, Auvergne, in 1757, to an old, illustrious family of the provincial and military nobility. He lost both his parents early: his father was killed by the British at the Battle of Minden when Lafayette was two years old (1759), and when he was thirteen and attending the prestigious Collège de Plessis in Paris both his mother and grandfather died (1770). John Stanton Baldwin (1834-1909), the son of John Denison Baldwin (1809-1833) and Lemira (Hathaway) Baldwin (1813-1904), was born on 6 January 1834, in New Haven, Conn. During the Civil War he was captain of Co. F of the 51st Massachusett Regiment. He worked, along side his father, as editor and publisher of the "Spy," in Worcester, Mass., from 1859-1898.
