Diary, 1870.

The pocket diary, kept in the _Patent Self Closing Diary for 1870_, contains miscellaneous notes, including a biography of Lafayette; details of a trip to the White Mountains, including Crawford Notch and the Old Man of the Mountain; lectures, concerts, and fairs; addresses; and a list of the birth dates of three of his children. There is also extensive landscaping information and details of planting and gardening on his property. There are seven pages of political notes, along with the yea and nay votes on three motions. Included also are his personal cash account for the period 29 April to 31 December, and the cash account for the Republican City Committee for the period 1 November to 27 December.

Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, marquis de Lafayette was born at Chavaniac, Auvergne, in 1757, to an old, illustrious family of the provincial and military nobility. John Stanton Baldwin (1834-1909), the son of John Denison Baldwin (1809-1833) and Lemira (Hathaway) Baldwin (1813-1904), was born on 6 January 1834, in New Haven, Conn. During the Civil War he was captain of Co. F of the 51st Massachusett Regiment. He worked, along side his father, as editor and publisher of the "Spy," in Worcester, Mass., from 1859-1898.
