Papers, consisting of correspondence to George Carrington (1711-1785) of Cumberland County, Virginia and his sons concerning family and business matters. Much of the two volumes consists of letters addressed to Peyton R. Carrington (1834-1911) of Richmond, Virginia, concerning his inquiries for genealogical information on the Carrington family in Virginia, Barbados, and elsewhere. The first volume includes a name index to the letters. The second volume also contains letters with a new numbering sequence. There is no index to this volume. Included in the letters are transcriptions of Bible records and family registers, as well as typed transcriptions of some of the letters. There is substantial information on the Bradley, Flowers, Harrison, Meriwether, Shields, Vaden, Walton, Watkins, Wilkinson, Word, and Worsham families. The Carrington family Bible and prayer book of George Carrington (1711-1785) of Barbados and Cumberland County, Virginia, contains birth and death dates, along with detailed genealogical information on the Carrington family recorded by Peyton Rodes Carrington (1834-1911). Includes genealogical information on the family from its emigration from England to Barbados and then to Virginia. The volume also contains a description of the Carrington family coat of arms, and transcripts of deeds, letters, obituaries, and facsimiles of family members' handwriting, as well as genealogical notes about the Mayo family. This item is also available on microfilm (Misc. Reel 1353).

Edward Carrington (February 11, 1748 – October 28, 1810) was an American soldier and statesman from Virginia. During the American Revolutionary War he became a lieutenant colonel of artillery in the Continental Army. He distinguished himself as quartermaster general in General Nathanael Greene’s southern campaign. He commanded artillery at Monmouth and Yorktown. Peyton Rodes Carrington was born 9 January 1834 in Cumberland County, Virginia, to Joseph Littlebury Carrington and Adaline Sydney Jones Carrington. He was educated by private tutors, then attended Hampden-Sidney College. Carrington became a civil engineer, then helped his father operate hotels in Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia.
