Peyton Rodes Carrington was born 9 January 1834 in Cumberland County, Virginia, to Joseph Littlebury Carrington and Adaline Sydney Jones Carrington. He was educated by private tutors, then attended Hampden-Sidney College. Carrington became a civil engineer, then helped his father operate hotels in Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia. During the Civil War, he served in a cavalry unit, before poor health landed him in the quartermaster's department, then the engineers corps. After the war ended, Carrington was a merchant in Richmond until 1880, then he became a farmer in Henrico County, Virginia. Carrington married Sarah Jane Carrington (1832-1915), and they had children of which only one survived to adulthood. Carrington died in Richmond 24 July 1911, and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
