Papers of the McCleary family of Boston, Mass. pertain to the lives and careers of attorneys, justices of the peace, and the first and second city clerks of Boston Samuel Foster McCleary (1780-1855) and his son Samuel Foster McCleary (1822-1901). Business papers, 1809-82, include correspondence, legal papers, records from court cases and legal decisions, and mortgages and deeds to land in Boston and Medford, Mass. Correspondents include James Freeman Clarke, Harrison Gray Otis, Alexander H. Rice, Samuel C. Cobb, and Charles Sumner. Personal papers of Samuel F. McCleary (1780-1855) includes a math notebook, 1791, writing books with notes on the Federal Street Theater, 1796, and a line-a-day diary, 1813. Personal papers of Samuel F. McCleary (1822-1901) include essays and public addresses, 1836-97; class notes, family letters, and memorabilia from his time at Harvard College, 1837-41; correspondence with fellow 1841 Harvard class members, 1877-92; and an autobiography, 1868-83. Also includes a commonplace-book, 1832, and letterbook, 1811-25, of wife of Samuel F. (1780-1855) Maria Lynde Walter McCleary; a commonplace-book, 1857-70, of their daughter Maria Louisa McCleary; a school book of Thomas Luckis, 1735; McCleary family genealogical information gathered by Helen C. McCleary, 1891-1955; and clippings, 1896-1924.
