The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. E.M. Delafield was the pseudonym of Edmee Elizabeth Monica Dashwood, daughter of the novelist, Mrs. Henry de la Pasture. E.M. Delafield wrote approximately 40 books and three plays. George Dillon was an American poet, editor, and translator. He was born in Florida, raised in the Midwest, and graduted from the University of Chicago. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his collection of poems, The Flowering Stone. He was also the editor of the journal Poetry, and translated Baudelaire's poems from Les Fleurs du Mal in conjunction with Edna St. Vincent Millay.
