The Doyle C. Akers Memoir consists of a typed, unpublished manuscript by Akers, the second part (pages 291-704) of his memoir "A Seaman's Personal History of Mobile Construction Battalion Three." It is a detailed account of Akers's service with the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Three while it was stationed on Amchitka Island, from 15 February to 6 June 1951, and includes events immediately following. The first part of the memoir, titled "Its Organization at Port Hueneme, California," is not included in the collection. Akers's readable narrative recounts his thoughts and activities while serving as company journalist with MCB Three, presents details of the company as a whole and their work on the nuclear testing project planned for Amchitka, and describes the natural history and weather of the island. During his months on Amchitka, Akers gathered information about the project and the island and sent it to his brother, a journalist in Denver. Akers suspects that the details leaked by his brother led to the shutting down of the project before any nuclear devices could be detonated. The final pages of the memoir include a summary of all subsequent nuclear tests on Amchitka.

Doyle C. Akers (b. 1927) is from Texas and served with the Naval Reserves during the Korean War. As part of Mobile Construction Battalion Three on Amchitka Island, Alaska, he served as a journalist, publishing a battalion newspaper, the MCB Three Breeze. He was discharged in November in 1951.
