John Bellinger was born in Colleton District, South Carolina on September 24, 1804. He studied medicine under Dr. Edward North in Charleston and attended lectures at the newly established Medical College of South Carolina. He finished his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania from which he graduated in 1826. He returned to Charleston and set up a general practice in medicine.
