Historical markers file, 1949-2005.

Correspondence, research material, memoranda, bulletins, reports, and clippings concerning the proposal, approval, preparation of text for erection, and maintenance of historical markers. The historical marker program was created by Legislative act in 1953. Markers are suggested by groups or members of the public and approved by the State Historical Society staff; there are more the 500 historic markers in the state.

An Office of Sites and Markers was established at the State Historical Society about 1954. It operated as a separate division until 1978 when supervision of the sites was turned over to the Museum Division (see WIHV86-A2049). The Historic Preservation Division was established within the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (WIHV85-A216) in 1977. In 2005 the Division merged with the Division of Public History (WIHV97-A89) to form the Division of Historic Preservation-Public History.
