The papers contain letters to Copeland, editor and publisher of the Newport News daily press. Most are routine notes, or invitations to the Virginia Press Association. Of interest are letters from Harry Byrd on the short ballot, from John Powell on the Massenburg Bill to legalize segregation in public places, and two letters on municipal ownership of the Newport News waterworks. The collection also contains Reminiscencies of the White Sulphur Springs by Grace Beale Cunningham Copeland that includes an anecdote about Robert E. Lee's daughter Mary, a scrapbook of clippings and speeches by Copeland, William Atkinson Jones and Arthur Nash and a scrapbook of newspaper columns by or about Grace and Walter Copeland. Correspondents include Thomas Staples Martin, William Garland Pollard, Theodore Roosevelt and Claude Augustus Swanson.
