Boston's Superintendent of Markets was a city appointee charged with policing the produce and mercantile markets and streets around Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. He was responsible for renting out booths and stalls, evicting those failing to pay their rent, evicting loiterers, transients, smokers, "itinerant peddlers," and anyone creating a disturbance. He also checked certificates for doing business, oversaw the proper disposal of market refuse, checked weights and measures, and kept tabs on the freshness of food products sold in the markets. Disputes between produce sellers, accidents, thefts, and building maintenance issues are frequently reported. The entry for 1926 Sept. 14 notes the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Quincy Market. During the 1930s the Superintendent was Frank J. Kiernan.

In 1858, the stalls were removed and the market was reopened as the New Faneuil Hall Market. George E. McKay was appointed superintendent in 1877. From...
