This collection consists of papers of various members of the McIntosh family who were descended from John Mohr McIntosh, through his son William. Those represented in the collection are John Nash McIntosh, William Swinton McIntosh, John McQueen McIntosh, and Lachlan H. McIntosh. There are also copies of papers pertaining to John Mohr McIntosh, Roderick McIntosh, General Lachlan McIntosh, and a grant of land to Charles H. McIntosh, 1853. Genealogies of the McIntosh family, clippings pertaining to various members, three issues of The Darien Gazette (Oct. 5, 1824, April 12, 1825, May 7, 1904), and photographs of James Simmons McIntosh, James McQueen McIntosh, and Lachlan H. McIntosh, all by Mathew Brady, are in the collection. Also in this collection is a list of the tracts of land belonging to the Troup and McIntosh families, 1766-1776. The papers of John Nash McIntosh consist of correspondence, 1815-1840, and include commissions, 1808-1820, deeds and estate papers, 1865 and 1878. Among the correspondents are his father, Gen. John McIntosh, Gen. Duncan L. Clinch, and Gen. Winfield Scott. All of the papers except two of William S. McIntosh are deeds and plats to his portion of Bellevue Plantation. The exceptions are a copy of The Darien Gazette, May 7, 1904, with his obituary, and an undated clipping listing members of the 5th Georgia Cavalry who surrendered at Greensboro, N.C., 1865, including W.S. McIntosh. Also included is a list of the slaves belonging to the estate of John Nash McIntosh in 1865. John McQueen McIntosh's journal contains miscellaneous notes pertaining to the Ocmulgee and Flint Railroad, 1841 (p. 6-10, 18, 138), the Centennial Almanac, 1800-1900 (p. 26), geometrical calculations, philosophical discussions, poetry,, a Fourth of July oration, 1854 (p. 101-114), several letters, and personal accounts. The letters of Lachlan H. McIntosh, 1892, concern the claims of heirs of General John McIntosh against the government. The papers relating to John Mohr McIntosh, Roderick McIntosh, and Lachlan McIntosh are copies from sources available elsewhere. The genealogies are all of the McIntosh family, particularly the Borlum branch. The Darien Gazette, Oct. 5, 1824, has an article and notices on the hurricane of that year. The papers are in folders in this order: John Nash McIntosh (4 folders), followed by those of his wife, Sarah Ann Rokenbaugh McIntosh which pertaining to J.N. McIntosh's estate; William Swinton McIntosh; John McQueen McIntosh; Lachlan H. McIntosh; other McIntoshes; genealogies; the Darien Gazette, 1824 and 1825; clippings. Photographs. Two oversized surveys are outside the box.

John Nash McIntosh (1783-1843) was born near Savannah, Georgia, the son of General John and Sarah Swinton McIntosh. According to the family Bible, his full name was John Hugh Nash McIntosh. He was appointed at Darien as captain in the 4th U.S. Infantry in 1808; he served in the War of 1812. When he resigned from the army in 1920, John was a Major in the 8th U.S. Infantry. Lachlan H. McIntosh was a major and commander of the Georgia State Ordnance during the Civil War. From 1885-1896 he was in government service in Washington, first in the Pension Office and then in the Geological Survey. He was the grandson of Lachlan McIntosh (b. 1750), who was the son of Col. The 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment was organized in January 1863. It was formed through the consolidation of the 1st and 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalions.
