Gardiner Andrus Armstrong Deane was born 23 June 1840 in Norfolk County, Mass. He served in the Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and inspector-general of the department stationed at Little Rock. At the conclusion of the war, he went into the mercantile business until 1867 when he became chief clerk of the land department of the Union Pacific Railroad (Central Branch).
