Deane, G. A. A. (Gardiner Andrus Armstrong), 1840-1919
Variant namesGardiner Andrus Armstrong Deane was born 23 June 1840 in Norfolk County, Mass. He served in the Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and inspector-general of the department stationed at Little Rock. At the conclusion of the war, he went into the mercantile business until 1867 when he became chief clerk of the land department of the Union Pacific Railroad (Central Branch). Acting in this capacity for several years, he was promoted to assistant land commissioner and later transferred to the operating department as assistant superintendent. In 1885 he became superintendent of construction of the Salina, Lincoln and Western Railroad (branch of the Union Pacific). He remained here until 1891 when he accepted the position of land commissioner of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern and the Little Rock and Fort Smith Railroads, with headquarters in Little Rock. As land commissioner, he managed one of the largest amounts of land under the control of one individual. Of secondary interest to Deane was raising trotting-bred horses; he founded a stock farm in Frankfort, Kan., in 1878. In 1866 G.A.A. Deane married Eliza J. Seymour of Milwaukee, Wis. They had four children. Deane and his wife both died in Aug. 1919. They are buried in Oakland Cemetery, Little Rock.
