Diary of Tracy Patch Cheever, a Chelsea, Mass., lawyer who later became a soldier and state legislator. Cheever comments on his law practice, reunions with his Brown University classmates, books he read, and Boston theater productions. Of particular interest are his observations on the visit of President Millard Fillmore and Canadian Governor-General Lord Elgin to Boston in 1851, the inauguration of President Franklin Pierce, the death of Daniel Webster, the visits of Hungarian patriot Lajos (Louis) Kossuth, the performances of actresses Anna C. Mowatt and Catharine Hayes, and the public uproar caused by the forcible return of a fugitive slave captured in Boston in 1854.
