John R. McGrath was born in Kansas City on June 9, 1923. After a legal education and naval service in World War II and the Korean War, McGrath was working in the U.S. Patent Office in 1958, when he was recruited as a patent attorney with the Legal Department of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company.
