John R. McGrath was born in Kansas City on June 9, 1923. After a legal education and naval service in World War II and the Korean War, McGrath was working in the U.S. Patent Office in 1958, when he was recruited as a patent attorney with the Legal Department of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. McGrath worked primarily on nylon and its products, during which time he assembled a "Collection of nylon art," a notebook containing all the nylon patents of the DuPont Company that he could find. He later worked for Berg Electronics, a new DuPont subsidiary, until his retirement in 1985. He died on June 19, 2002.
