Correspondence, notes, and accounts of merchants Henry Bromfield, Sr.; his brother Thomas Bromfield; and his son Henry Bromfield, Jr. Thomas and Henry, Jr. lived in England and corresponded with Henry, Sr. in Harvard, Massachusetts, concerning business and family matters. Other correspondents include Sarah Bromfield Pearson, sister of Henry and Thomas; Daniel Denison Rogers, Henry, Jr.'s brother-in-law; and Isaac Rogers, a distant cousin of Daniel Rogers. Also included are Henry, Sr.'s shares in the Union Turnpike Corporation of Massachusetts and the "answers of Massachusetts" to the "objections of British Sugar Planters and others in regard to trading with France," dated about 1731.

The Bromfield family was a distinguished clan of Boston merchants who had first arrived in America in the 17th century. Edward Bromfield was born in 1695 and died in 1756. The beginning of this collection almost certainly reflects his activities in the trade of rum, sugar and molasses. His son Henry was born in 1727 and also became a merchant though his later dealings focused on the English trade in cloth, ribbons and sundries.
