Bromfield, Henry, 1727-1820

Hide Profile

The Bromfield family was a distinguished clan of Boston merchants who had first arrived in America in the 17th century. Edward Bromfield was born in 1695 and died in 1756. The beginning of this collection almost certainly reflects his activities in the trade of rum, sugar and molasses. His son Henry was born in 1727 and also became a merchant though his later dealings focused on the English trade in cloth, ribbons and sundries. The bulk of records reflect his activity which continued until around 1777. In that year, after serving seven months as a colonel in the Boston regiment of the continental army, Henry Bromfield retired from business and moved from Boston to Harvard, MA. His son, Henry Bromfield Jr., born in 1751, had worked with his father but after the war moved to England. Henry Bromfield died in Harvard in 1820. His son died in 1837 in Chelmsford, England.
