Howard McKinley Corning papers [manuscript], 1899-1977.

Howard McKinley Corning was an Oregon historian and poet, and a teacher within the Portland Center for the State System of Higher Education. He was best known for his editorship of the "Dictionary of Oregon History," 1956. This collection includes correspondence, poetry, manuscripts, copies of the "Dictionary," and various Works Progress Administration documents. Correspondence includes the family correspondence of H. M. Corning, Dorothy Corning Stewart, Glen Milford Corning, and Robert N. Corning; and personal and business correspondence with Pat Gow, Edith Selby Hatcher, Leslie Jennings, Louise Scott and William Stafford. Also included is correspondence regarding the poetry column for the Oregonian newspaper and Northwest poetry activities, as well as research notes, articles, reviews, newsletters and minutes regarding the Federal Writer's Project, the Oregon State Poetry Association, and the Poetry Society of America. A 150-page manuscript copy of "All the words on the pages : portraits and personal days in Oregon's golden age of life and letters 1923-1939," which was printed in the Oregon Historical Quarterly, January to September 1973, is included, as is a printer's copy of "Willamette Landings," first edition, 1947. The collection includes materials designated as Mss 1621-1.
