Painter Emanuel Leutze was born in Germany and emigrated to America in his youth. He became well-known regionally for his painting, especially portraits, and returned to Germany to paint and study from 1841 through 1859. William Henry Furness, Unitarian minister, was born 20 Apr. 1802 in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1825 Furness was ordained minister of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia. He became pastor emeritus of the congregation in 1875 and continued to preach occasionally until his death 30 Jan. 1896 in Philadelphia.
