Research materials collected by Daniel Hoffman for his book, Paul Bunyan: last of the frontier demigods (Temple Univ. Press, 1952). Includes correspondence from E. P. Conkle, Max Gartenberg, Herbert Halpert, Walter P. Kueffner, William Laughead, Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago, Ill.), Douglas S. Steinberg of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, Oregon State Archives, Julian Lee Rayford, Irving Rusinow, James Stevens to Henry Clepper, Ida Virginia Turney, and Louis Untermeyer; advertising pamphlets for the Red River Lumber Co. written and illustrated by W. B. Laughead; and collections of Paul Bunyan tales by Charles E. Brown published by the Wisconsin Folklore Society, and others. Includes copies of transcribed interviews about Paul Bunyan conducted by Herbert Halpert from 1941-1949 with Fred Ginther, Frank Odell, Albert Peterson, Gabriel Simon, Shock Wormuth, and Irvan Wormuth. Includes 19 color lithograph prints illustrating Paul Bunyan tales, plus one advertisement, issued by the Mead Corporation in 1951. Artists include Herschel Levit, Edward C. Smith, Hutton, Joseph Bolden, S. W. Wilcox, and Henry C. Pitz. Includes material from the WPA Federal Writer's Project in Oregon, "Analytical Notes" by Charles Oluf Olsen (41 pp.); microfilm. Also includes American Graphics poster by Milton Glaser, pamphlets, postcards, a Classic illustrated junior comic book (No. 519 Paul Bunyan), menu, newspaper clippings, and membership card for the Mystic Knights of the Blue Ox (Milwaukee, Wisc.).

Herschel Levit was born in 1912 in Pennsylvania. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and later taught at the Pratt Institute for 30 years. He worked as a painter and printmaker, creating illustrations and advertisements. Levit died in 1986.
