Records, 1938-1979.

Records of the Coe Foundation include ledgers, minutes, tax records, legal papers, records relating to artworks and other property owned by the foundation, records of donations from William Robertson Coe, and papers of organizations around the country which received contributions from the Foundation, including the W.R. Coe Memorial Hospital in Cody, Wyoming, Buffalo Bill Memorial Association, Yale University Library, and churches, schools, hospitals, cultural and charitable organizations. Other records include correspondence of Marguerite Pettet, long-time secretary of W. R. Coe and vice president of the Planting Fields Foundation; deeds, tax records, histories, articles, architectural studies and other material about the Planting Fields estate; interviews with Coe family members and friends about the estate; correspondence, reports, plans and sketches of landscaping, water supply, wood and metal crafting, architectural and other work done on the estate by Olmstead Brothers, Walker & Gillette, Albert L. Webster, Parson & Co., and other contractors, 1918-1940; horticultural catalogs from nurseries throughout the United States and Europe, 1930's-1950's; miscellaneous estate payroll records and farm inventories; photos and architectural plans; and papers relating to the history and restoration of Coe Hall.

Eli Whitney was born in Westborough, Massachusetts in 1765. Even as a child he showed an aptitude for mechanical work, repairing violins and taking on other mechanical work as it presented itself.
