The bulk of these papers relate to the business and legal affairs of Gilbert Merritt and include account books, receipts, bills of sale, subpoenas, petitions, wills and estate inventories, deeds, bonds, licenses, and a few letters; account books include five volumes kept by Gilbert Merritt, 1756-1781, from his shoemaking business, general merchandising, and tavern, and one volume kept by William Slater, 1774-1786, concerning agricultural work. Other subjects include legal affairs from Merritt's Justice of the Peace duties, land transactions, financial affairs, estate settlements, operation of Merritt's ferry business, and military affairs. Other persons represented include Gilbert Merritt, Jr. (1753-1824), William Slater (1749-1830), William Slater, Jr. and his wife Penelope Merritt Slater, their son William Slater (d. ca. 1849), and John Slater. Some papers concern the related Miller, Lyon, and Horton families. There are only a few items from the years 1774-1783.

Gilbert Merritt (1725-1785) was a merchant and tavern keeper in Rye who also owned a ferry and market sloop. He served as Justice of the Peace from 1772-1776.
