Slater family.
Gilbert Merritt (1725-1785) was a merchant and tavern keeper in Rye who also owned a ferry and market sloop. He served as Justice of the Peace from 1772-1776. His granddaughter Penelope Merritt married William Slater, Jr. (1785-1832).
