Papers of Benjamin Stone, 1844-1906, include correspondence, art catalogs, receipts and bills, sketches and prints, letters patent, military papers from his Civil War service, school essays, diaries (1848-1859, 1880), and photographs, with biographical materials, 1974-1982. Correspondence includes letters received from fellow artists Frederick Church, Jasper F. Cropsey, Benjamin Champney, and George H. Clement; and Stone's letters to his wife concerning his painting and sketching, his Civil War experiences, and family and personal matters. Papers of his wife, Mary Allen DuBois Stone, include her diaries, 1876-1899, concerning her husband's art work, his association with other artists, social visits, her children, and events and people in Catskill; letters received from friends and family, ca. 1860-1906, including condolences on the death of her daughter Julia Meserole; and a scrapbook and copybook of poetry, 1849.

Benjamin Champney (November 20, 1817 – December 11, 1907) was a painter whose name has become synonymous with White Mountain art of the 19th century. He began his training as a lithographer under celebrated marine artist Fitz Henry Lane at Pendleton's Lithography shop in Boston.
