Civil War Veteran and minor artist of the Hudson River School of Landscape Painters. Born and raised in Belmont, Massachusetts, enlisted in 1862 to serve three years with 1st Massachusetts Regiment Heavy Artillery. He mustered in as 1st Lieutenant on 20 March 1863; advanced to 2nd Lieutenant by 23 August 1863; and was discharged from service due to disability on 1 December 1863. He was married to Mary A. Du Bois. They removed to Catskill, New York after the Civil War, where he devoted much of his time to painting.
